About the museum
The West Cork Heritage Centre is housed in the former Christchurch on North Main Street in Bandon. The church dates from about 1610, stands on the site of an earlier Danish fort and was among the first Protestant churches in Ireland. It served as a church for 363 years until it was deconsecrated in 1973.
Part of the old walls of Bandon is built into the structure of the building. The former church now holds a changing series of exhibitions about the history of Bandon and its surroundings. Visitors can walk through replicas of an old shop, a school, a kitchen and a forge, see the old town stocks, and look at memorabilia from the time when Bandon was a garrison town. Some Bandon church records are also held at the centre.
The centre’s news pages mention local events such as the Bandon Walled Town Festival and Heritage Week talks. School tours are welcome, and groups should contact the centre in advance.
