About the museum

The antiquarium in Via Donaggio preserves a section of the 1st-century AD Roman aqueduct that carried water captured in the Val Rosandra, about 15 kilometres from the city, to Tergeste. It was one of three water systems supplying the ancient city.

Visitors can see a segment of the conduit, originally underground, with its internal lining of cocciopesto (opus signinum) that made it watertight, and one of the inspection shafts opening into the vault of the channel. Remains of a Roman villa have also emerged along the route.

The site is protected by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia, which handles requests for visits.
