About the museum
Armani/Silos was opened in Milan on 30 April 2015 by Giorgio Armani, at via Bergognone 40, to celebrate forty years of his career. The building was a granary built in 1950: after renovation it covers about 4,500 square metres on four levels. The designer conceived the project and oversaw it personally, and chose the name Silos because grain, a material necessary for life, was once stored there, just as clothing is.
The renovation focused on simplicity and rigour, with regular geometric forms and spaces that respect the original architecture and its unusual beehive-like shape. Beyond the exhibition areas, the building includes a giftshop, a café with an outdoor space and a digital archive, which allows visitors to consult material from the designer's personal archive.
In its first ten years the space presented a selection of Giorgio Armani's prêt-à-porter collections, organised around themes linked to the designer's creative work. From 2016 the permanent collection has been joined by temporary exhibitions devoted to fashion, photography, architecture and design. Armani/Silos also hosts educational activities, cultural meetings and projects with schools and institutions.
