First part of a two-chapter project devoted to the art collection that Arnaldo Pomodoro has assembled over time: works acquired through purchases, exchanges and gifts, which bear witness to his ties with artists and intellectuals.
About the museum
The Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro is the Milanese institution that preserves, studies and promotes the work of the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro (born in 1926 in the Montefeltro and based in Milan since 1954) and his archive. From 2005 to 2011 the Foundation’s exhibition venue occupied the former Officine Meccaniche Riva-Calzoni building in Via Solari, today the Milan site of Fendi.
In the basement of that building is the Labirinto, an environmental work begun in 1995 as a work in progress. It covers about 170 square metres, with a maximum height of 3.80 metres, and is made of bronze, copper and coloured, patinated fibreglass. The carved surfaces evoke archaic scripts, wedges and incisions; the route draws on the Epic of Gilgamesh and interweaves mythical and autobiographical themes with the stages of the artist’s career.
After a period of closure the Labirinto reopened to the public on 17 March 2025, with a new entrance from the Fendi showroom; entry is allowed only with a booked guided tour. The Foundation also maintains its seat at Via Vigevano 3, where the bookshop, the archive and the Open Studio exhibition cycle devoted to the artist’s collection are located.
