About the museum

The basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, known as the Collegiata or Duomo, stands in the Piazza del Duomo. It was perhaps built in 1056 and consecrated in 1148; it was restructured in 1239 and enlarged in 1460 to a design by Giuliano da Maiano. The façade dates from the 13th-century arrangement, and in 1932 Pope Pius XI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica.

The interior is covered by large fresco cycles. Lippo and Federico Memmi painted the Stories of the New Testament between 1338 and 1340, while Bartolo di Fredi produced the Stories of the Old Testament in 1367. In 1393 Taddeo di Bartolo signed the Last Judgement.

The Santa Fina chapel, designed by the Da Maiano family and completed in 1468, was frescoed by Domenico Ghirlandaio. The ticket gives access to the basilica and the Museo d'Arte Sacra and includes the audio guide.
