About the museum

The Ca' d'Oro is one of Venice's most prestigious late-Gothic palaces and retains the structure of the old Venetian merchant houses (case-fondaco). The well in the courtyard was carved by Bartolomeo Bon in 1427, while the mosaic floor of ancient marbles was commissioned by Baron Giorgio Franchetti (1865-1927) to recall the early Christian basilicas.

Franchetti restored the palace with great commitment and in 1916 donated to the Italian state both the building and his collections. The gallery opened to the public in 1927, the year of the baron's death; his ashes rest beneath a porphyry slab in the entrance hall.

Since its opening the collection has been enlarged with Renaissance works from religious buildings that were suppressed or demolished, and with material from other state museums in Venice. In 1992 a section dedicated to Venetian ceramics was opened in the nearby Palazzo Duodo. The collection includes furniture, paintings, medals, tapestries, small bronzes and sculptures. Since 2 February 2026 the museum has been closed for the final phase of restoration and rehanging works, supported by Venetian Heritage and the Fondazione Giulio e Giovanna Sacchetti.
