About the museum
The Cappella Sansevero is a religious and funerary building of the di Sangro family, princes of Sansevero, in the old centre of Naples, a short distance from Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. The building dates from the late 16th century and now houses the museum.
In the 18th century Prince Raimondo di Sangro had the interior decoration renewed with a complex sculptural and pictorial programme, which made it one of the most singular places of the Neapolitan Baroque. In the nave are, among other works, the famous Cristo velato and several allegorical sculptures.
The visit route comprises the nave, the underground vault, which houses the Macchine anatomiche, and the sacristy with the bookshop. Access to the museum is regulated by a limited number of daily entries, with mandatory booking.
