About the museum
The Museo Storico Musicale was inaugurated by the composer Francesco Cilea on 3 December 1925, but its collections had been started as early as 1868. It is a diffuse museum, spread across the rooms of the former Celestine monastery of San Pietro a Majella, today the seat of the Conservatory.
The picture gallery holds over two hundred paintings, including portraits of musicians such as Paisiello, Tosti and Sebastiani, and works by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Gennaro Maldarelli, Filippo Palizzi and Francesco Paolo Michetti. On the first floor of the institute the musical instruments are on display: a harp by Antonio Stradivari of 1681, the harpsichord-piano “Vis à Vis” by Johann Andreas Stein of 1783, the pianos given by Catherine II of Russia to Cimarosa and Paisiello, 18th-century psalteries, Erard and Pleyel harps, and wind instruments, including a horn that belonged to Rossini’s father. A section also traces Neapolitan lutherie of the 18th and 19th centuries.
