About the museum
The idea of a museum dedicated to Dante dates back to 1949, when the Unione Fiorentina, a cultural association founded in Florence, made it a priority. In 1960, in view of the seventh centenary of the poet’s birth, the association obtained permission to set it up in Dante’s house, which had until then housed municipal offices. The museum opened to the public in May 1965 thanks to contributions from various bodies, including the Municipality of Florence and the Ministry of Public Education.
On 24 June 2020 the museum inaugurated a new technological, multimedia and interactive display, designed for a more engaging visit. The route unfolds over three floors and nine rooms: the first floor tells the story of Dante and medieval Florence, from the battle of Campaldino to the city’s arts and economy, and to political life and exile; the second floor is devoted to the birth of the Italian language, the poet’s bedroom and the Divine Comedy; the third floor compares Dante’s city with Florence today.
Among the experiences offered are a 3D reconstruction of Dante’s face on a holographic display, an immersive projection on the battle of Campaldino, reproductions of the Libro del Chiodo and of the Codice Trivulziano 1080, a virtual reality experience of medieval Florence and video mapping on a large book dedicated to the Comedy. The museum’s mission remains to spread knowledge of Dante’s life and works and of the Florence of his time.
