About the museum
In 1786 Johann Wolfgang Goethe left Weimar for his journey to Italy, where he stayed until May 1788 and spent most of his time in Rome. There he lived, at first incognito, in an apartment on the Via del Corso shared with the painters Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, Johann Georg Schütz and Friedrich Bury. Tischbein gave him a room where Goethe worked on Iphigenia until his departure for Naples in February 1787.
Since 1997 the apartment has housed the Casa di Goethe, the only German museum abroad. The permanent exhibition “Goethe in Italia” reconstructs the poet’s everyday life with documents, letters and drawings by Tischbein, and presents his interests in the theory of colours, plants and art. Among the attractions is Andy Warhol’s portrait of Goethe of 1982, inspired by Tischbein’s famous painting “Goethe in the Roman Campagna”.
The museum has its own collection, expanded over the years with the support of the German federal government and sponsors, and two libraries: the Biblioteca goethiana, specialised in editions of Goethe’s works, and the Biblioteca storica, which includes the holdings of the association of German artists in Rome. The house is also a place of Italian-German cultural exchange, with temporary exhibitions, readings and conferences.
