About the museum

Giorgio de Chirico moved into the apartment in Piazza di Spagna in 1948, at the age of sixty, and lived and worked there for the last thirty years of his life. The house occupies the top three floors of the 17th-century Palazzetto dei Borgognoni, overlooking Piazza di Spagna, the steps leading up to Trinità dei Monti and Villa Medici.

The painter’s second wife, Isabella Far, lived there until her death in 1990; with her bequest the house was made accessible to the public. The museum opened on 20 November 1998. The interiors were reconstructed with the original furnishings by the foundation that bears the names of the couple.

The ground floor is a richly furnished gallery with paintings and sculptures; on the upper floors are the bedrooms and the artist’s studio, reconstructed as faithfully as possible to how it looked during his working years. Works from the private collection include, for example, a self-portrait of 1953, “Il meditatore” (1971) and the “Ritratto di Isa con testa di Minerva” (1944).
