About the museum
The castle of Fénis was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and took its present form thanks to the lords of Challant. Around 1340–1370 Aimone di Challant gave it its characteristic pentagonal plan, with towers, battlements and a fortified curtain wall enclosing a noble residence.
Later Bonifacio I di Challant transformed the building into a more refined residence, and between 1415 and 1420 he had the frescoes in Gothic taste executed, including the courtyard cycle, which opens with Saint George slaying the dragon, and those of the chapel.
From the 16th century the castle declined and was long used as a farm. In 1896 it was bought and restored by the architect Alfredo d’Andrade. Further works between 1936 and 1942 rebuilt the outer walls and opened the entrance on the south side, and the castle later housed a museum of Aosta Valley furnishings.
