About the museum
The visitor centre with natural history museum is located in the area of the Riserva naturale orientata Oasi San Giuliano (San Giuliano oriented nature reserve), in the territory of Miglionico. The reserve centres on the artificial lake created between 1950 and 1957 by damming the Bradano river for irrigation purposes; the lake attracted numerous waterbirds from the start and became a wildlife protection oasis in 1976.
In 1989 WWF Italia obtained the nature management of the area and set up an oasis there. In 2000 the Regione Basilicata established the riserva naturale orientata and entrusted its management to the Province of Matera; the area is also a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area. The Eurasian penduline tit (pendolino) is the emblem of the oasis.
