About the museum
The Domus Romana Lucca, known as the “Casa del Fanciullo sul Delfino”, is an archaeological site in the historic centre of Lucca, discovered in 2010 beneath a historic palace owned by the Bulleri family. The excavations were directed by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici della Toscana (the regional heritage authority), which judged the remains to be of fundamental importance for the historical reconstruction of the city. In 2015 the structures were recognised as cultural heritage of the State.
The site is presented as the first and only one in Europe to have been uncovered, made into a museum and opened to the public using exclusively private funds. In a single room, visitors can observe the evolution of building techniques over two thousand years of the city's history: walls and Roman finds dating from the 1st century BC, and structures from the Lombard, medieval and Renaissance periods, with original friezes and objects.
The guided visit includes a short film on the origins of Lucca and of the site, and the viewing of the finds, some of which can be touched. The museum also has a permanent display of Roman coins and offers themed routes, activities for schools and visits for families.
