Textiles from the foundation's collection, ranging from archaeological finds to fabrics by twentieth-century artists, engage with works by Carla Accardi, Alighiero Boetti, Lucinda Childs and Matt Mullican, among others.
About the museum
The Fondazione Antonio Ratti was established in 1985 in Como by the entrepreneur and patron Antonio Ratti, born in 1915 and founder of the Tessitura Serica Antonio Ratti silk mill, with the aim of preserving his collection of antique textiles and sharing his passion for art and textiles. After his death in 2002, leadership passed to his daughter Annie Ratti.
Since 2010 the Foundation has been based in Villa Sucota, a historic residence overlooking Lake Como, as part of the Chilometro della Conoscenza project. Over 30,000 textile pieces from around the world are kept here, together with a public library of more than 7,800 volumes on textiles, fashion, visual arts and crafts.
Every year the villa hosts the Corso Superiore di Arti Visive (Artists' Research Laboratory), founded in 1995, as well as exhibitions in which the historic textiles of the collection engage in dialogue with contemporary works, lectures, courses and seminars. The villa's spaces and garden also host site-specific works by artists who have collaborated with the Foundation.
