About the museum
The Milan venue of Fondazione Prada, on Largo Isarco in the south of the city, was designed by the studio OMA led by Rem Koolhaas. It was created by transforming a distillery dating from the 1910s: three new buildings, the Podium, the Cinema and the Tower, were added to the existing structures, for a total area of 19,000 square metres.
The project is neither a restoration nor a new architecture; it brings the two together, keeping them distinct and in continuous dialogue. This articulation of spaces, heights and light makes it possible to show art in very different settings.
The Tower, 60 metres high and in exposed white concrete, completes the complex with nine floors whose plans alternate between trapezoidal and rectangular, and with ceilings rising from 2.7 to 8 metres; the top level is lit from above. Besides temporary exhibitions, the venue presents permanent projects: the installation Atlas in the spaces of the Tower, Processo Grottesco by Thomas Demand, Haunted House by Robert Gober with Louise Bourgeois, Le Studio d’Orphée by Jean-Luc Godard and Die Geburt des Buches aus dem Geiste der Natur by Andreas Slominski. The Foundation has other venues in Milan (Osservatorio, in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II) and in Venice (Ca’ Corner della Regina).
