About the museum
The Galleria d'arte moderna e contemporanea “Lorenzo Viani” is housed in Viareggio in the Palazzo delle Muse, a building whose construction began in 1861 to a design by the architect Giuseppe Poggi. Built as a seaside hospice for sick children, funded by the Comitato degli ospizi marini (Seaside Hospice Committee) founded by the doctor Giuseppe Barellai, the palazzo housed a seaside clinic from 1867, became a permanent children's colony in 1912 and for a period served as a military hospital during the First World War. In 1938 it was bought by the municipality of Viareggio.
The core of the collection dates from 1979, when the city bought fifty works by Lorenzo Viani from the Varraud Santini collection: today it is the most important public collection dedicated to this exponent of European Expressionism. The holdings have since grown, above all through private donations, notably the Pieraccini donation of about 2,300 works, mainly of European contemporary art, which gave the gallery its definitive layout in the palazzo, and the Lucarelli donation, with 45 works by the leading Italian artists of the 20th century.
The heritage comprises about 3,000 works by around 750 20th-century artists, spread across 17 collections. The largest part is prints, which makes the gallery an important exhibition centre for this field. The museum offers guided tours, workshops and educational routes, including for families.
