Galleria d'arte moderna Sant'Anna

Museum of modern art in the Sant’Anna monumental complex in the Kalsa district: over two hundred works from the 19th and 20th centuries across fourteen sections.

Opening hoursAdmission €10

About the museum

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna takes its name from Empedocle Restivo, who promoted the creation of a public collection of contemporary art for the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum opened on 24 May 1910 in the foyer of the Teatro Politeama in Palermo, and over more than a century its collections grew.

Since 2006 the gallery has been housed in the Sant’Anna monumental complex in the Kalsa district, a building reworked to meet the needs of a modern museum, with spaces suited to the collections and services for the public.

The route presents over two hundred works, paintings and sculptures, arranged in fourteen thematic and monographic sections devoted to the figurative arts in Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries. The scholarly arrangement was curated by a group coordinated by Fernando Mazzocca; the display was designed by Corrado Anselmi and the lighting by Leonardo Adragna. Alongside the permanent collection, the museum hosts cultural series, seminars and events.
