About the museum
The museum is run by the Istituto Ellenico di Studi Bizantini e Postbizantini in Venice, founded in 1951, and is housed on the first floor of a building on Campo dei Greci, next to the church of San Giorgio dei Greci. The building is the Scoletta di San Nicolò, which housed the hospital of the Greek Orthodox Confraternity of Venice from 1678 until the early twentieth century.
The collection comes from the city's Greek community and includes icons, manuscripts, documents and liturgical objects. The Byzantine works include two icons brought from Constantinople in the fifteenth century by Anna Paleologina Notara. The post-Byzantine works include many pieces by painters such as Klontzas, Damaskinos and Tzanes, largely of the Cretan school and dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century.
Among the manuscripts are a thirteenth-century parchment gospel book, a Romance of Alexander the Great with 250 miniatures and a papyrus from the age of Justinian from Ravenna. The collection also includes vestments, belts, an archbishop's encolpion, gold and silver objects, and patriarchal and ducal documents.
The museum opened in 1959 and was renovated in 1999.
