About the museum

MAXXI is Rome’s national museum of the arts of the 21st century. It was conceived as a large campus for culture and is housed in a building designed by Zaha Hadid, winner of an international competition, in the Flaminio district. The architecture, with its innovative and spectacular forms, is an essential part of the museum’s identity.

The museum is run by a Foundation established in July 2009 by the then Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali. Besides hosting exhibitions of art, architecture, design and photography, MAXXI runs projects on fashion, cinema, music, theatre and dance, meetings with artists and architects, and educational activities.

The art and architecture collection is the founding core of the museum and since 2015 has been presented in different, rotating displays. The art collection comprises more than 400 works of international standing, with particular attention to Italian experiences; the architecture collection gathers products and documents that show the complexity of architecture; the photographic collection, founded in 2003, counts about 2,400 author photographs. The museum also has archive centres for art and architecture and a library.
