About the museum

The Istituto storico e di cultura dell'Arma del Genio (ISCAG) of the Italian Army, known to the public as the Museo del Genio, brings together a museum, a specialist library, a historical archive and a photographic archive. It was founded in the early 20th century as the Museo dell'Ingegneria Militare Italiana (Museum of Italian Military Engineering), at a time when post-unification Italy was seeking symbols of a new shared identity. The present complex in the Quartiere della Vittoria was designed by Lieutenant Colonel of Engineers Gennaro De Matteis and built between 1936 and 1939, with elements of rationalism and simplified neoclassicism, a broad entrance exedra and towers recalling a fortified citadel.

The museum preserves a historical and technical heritage that tells the story of communications and engineering: visual signalling, carrier pigeons, optical instruments, the telegraph, radio sets of Guglielmo Marconi, who was a captain in the Engineers, and one of the first telephones devised by Antonio Meucci, along with field telephones and military switchboards. Also on display are scale models of Italian cities, bridge models and equipment from the Engineers' specialist branches. The documentary holdings comprise over 24,000 volumes, 30,000 historical photographs and more than 150,000 documents.

The route is spread over three rooms: the Sala delle Colonie e dell'Architettura Militare, with the “Spaccamela” sheet-metal fortlet that can be dismantled; the Sala della Fotografia, delle Trasmissioni e delle Fotoelettriche; and the Sala dell'Aeronautica e dei Ferrovieri, dedicated to the origins of the Italian Air Force and to the railway personnel of the Engineers. In 2025 the museum opened to the public on a permanent basis for the first time.
