About the museum
The Memoriale della Shoah di Milano is a museum area dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Italy. It lies beneath Milano Centrale station, at street level, in the area once used for the post office. From the so-called Binario 21 (Platform 21), previously used only for mail trains, hundreds of Jews, partisans and political deportees were loaded into cattle wagons bound for Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mauthausen, Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbrück, Flossenbürg, Fossoli and Bolzano; twenty trains departed from here.
The project is promoted by the Fondazione Memoriale della Shoah di Milano, which conceived it as a place of memory and at the same time of dialogue and encounter between religions, ethnic groups and cultures. The Memoriale occupies two floors, one at street level and one underground, covering about 7,000 square metres; the entrance is in Piazza Edmond J. Safra, formerly Via Ferrante Aporti.
Rather than a traditional museum, the foundation regards it as a laboratory of the present, with studies, temporary exhibitions and in-depth work on the Shoah, as well as educational activities. The site itself and the adjacent platform have been described as “a great historical relic”.
