About the museum
The Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia was founded in 1806 in the Isola district of Milan, near the sanctuary of Santa Maria alla Fontana, by the Manfredini brothers, who named it after Eugenio di Beauharnais, viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy. It was a prestigious bronze foundry.
The Barigozzi family, already with a long tradition in the art of casting, moved its business there around the middle of the 19th century, succeeding the Manfredini. It made the foundry one of the most renowned bronze foundries of the time, specialising in bells and artistic castings, and ran it for more than a century.
The museum, run by the firm F.lli Barigozzi, is housed in the carefully restored former workshops. It holds documents, photographs, tools and equipment from the foundry's work, and invites visitors to visit the workplaces and follow the stages of making bells, from the creation of the template to the casting. The collections include a photographic fonds, a paper archive, a plaster cast gallery and work tools. Since casting has ceased, the foundry continues to live on as a place of work, art and culture.
