About the museum
The museum arises from the bequest of the Florentine antiquarian Stefano Bardini (1836–1922), who gave the municipality of Florence the palazzo in Piazza dei Mozzi together with his collections. The building stands on the site of the former convent of San Gregorio alla Pace and was opened to the public as a municipal museum in 1925.
Bardini had transformed the palazzo into an exhibition and commercial space, where sculptures, paintings, furniture, weapons and frames were arranged by category against walls painted in a distinctive light blue, now known as “blu Bardini”. A long restoration carried out between 1999 and 2009 returned the display to its original layout.
The rooms are spread across the ground floor, mezzanines and first floor, with spaces dedicated to Madonnas, frames and weapons. The museum also contains finds from the historic centre and the city's churches, including Pietro Tacca's Porcellino and Giambologna's Diavolino.
