About the museum
The Galleria degli Uffizi occupies the first and second floors of a large building designed by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de’ Medici and built between 1560 and 1580. The palace was created to bring together in a single site the offices (uffizi) of the administration of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. From the beginning, however, the upper corridors housed the Medici family’s collections of ancient sculpture and works of art.
Over the centuries, the collections were expanded by the Medici grand dukes and then by the Lorraine grand dukes, and the Uffizi became one of the first galleries open to the public. The collection includes paintings from the 13th to the 20th century, sculptures from antiquity to the modern age, a cabinet of prints and drawings, books and archives, and a photography department.
Today the Gallery is part of the Gallerie degli Uffizi, a museum system that also includes Palazzo Pitti and the Giardino di Boboli. The route displays works by Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Caravaggio. The long galleries, with Roman statues copied from lost Greek originals, preserve the original spirit of the Medici collection.
