About the museum

The museum occupies the Aranciera of Villa Borghese, a building that already existed before the 17th-century works commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. In the 18th century Marcantonio IV Borghese enlarged it and decorated it in the Baroque style, with fountains and nymphaeums that earned it the name “Casino dei giuochi d’acqua”. It was destroyed in 1849 during the defence of the Roman Republic and rebuilt without decoration as a shelter for citrus trees over the winter, which gave it the name Aranciera (orangery).

From 1903 the building was used as offices and housing and, until 1982, as the seat of a religious institute and then of municipal offices. After restoration, with its exterior painted red, it became the home of the museum that houses the collection donated to Rome by the Italian-American entrepreneur and collector Carlo Bilotti.

The core of the collection consists of eighteen works by Giorgio de Chirico, paintings and sculptures. There are also works by Gino Severini, Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers and Giacomo Manzù, whose bronze “Grande cardinale” stands outside. The museum is managed by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina and is part of the Sistema Musei di Roma Capitale.
