About the museum
The Museo Correr originated from the bequest of the Venetian nobleman Teodoro Correr, who on his death in 1830 left to the city his collections and the family palace that housed them. The collection opened to the public on 26 August 1836.
In 1851, under the direction of Vincenzo Lazari, the collections were rearranged according to museum criteria. In 1887 they were moved to the Fondaco dei Turchi on the Grand Canal, where the natural history collections remained and later merged into the Museo di Storia Naturale. In 1922 the museum moved permanently to its present seat, in the Ala Napoleonica and the Procuratie Nuove on St Mark's Square.
The route includes the neoclassical rooms with works by Canova, the collections devoted to Venetian civilisation (institutions, urban planning, naval and economic power, daily life), and the Quadreria, rearranged by Carlo Scarpa between 1957 and 1960, with paintings by Lorenzo Veneziano, the Bellini, Carpaccio, Cosmè Tura, Antonello da Messina and Lorenzo Lotto. The Sale Reali, the apartments used by the reigning houses in the 19th century, can be visited by reservation. The museum is part of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and is linked in an integrated route to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the Sale Monumentali of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana.
