About the museum
Trajan's Markets are a large multi-level complex built at the foot of the Quirinal in the 2nd century AD, next to the Forum of Trajan. Shops, offices and service rooms line the Via Biberatica and surround the Grande Aula, one of the most remarkable examples of brick architecture of the imperial age.
Over the centuries the building was absorbed into medieval and modern constructions, including the Torre delle Milizie, and used for very different purposes. The recovery of the complex and the museum display made it possible to open the Museo dei Fori Imperiali to the public from 2007.
The route illustrates the history of the Forums of Caesar, Augustus, Nerva, Vespasian and Trajan with architectural fragments, sculptures and reconstructions, and allows visitors to walk through the market spaces themselves, with panoramic views over the area of the Forums.
