About the museum
Loano has always had a deep bond with the sea, which for centuries shaped the economic and social life of the town: first through fishing, then through shipyards and finally through seaside bathing establishments. Shipowners, captains, sailors, fishing craftsmen and divers famous for salvage missions and underwater research have lived here.
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Kursaal and was set up by the Associazione Culturale Marinara Lodanum with the collaboration of schools and local associations. It is dedicated to this bond. The permanent exhibition brings together scale ship models, historic instruments and equipment, documents, photographs, books, shipbuilding and fishing tools, maps, portolan charts, logbooks and seashells.
Among the most striking pieces is the Quasar A, a full-size, fully working submarine built by hand by Mario Lentini, and a collection of diving equipment that recalls feats of international importance, such as the recovery of the “Scirè” off Haifa.
