About the museum
The Museo del Risorgimento di Lucca is housed in several rooms of the Palazzo Ducale, overlooking the Cortile degli Svizzeri in the historic centre of the city. It was founded on the initiative of Lucchese veterans and enthusiasts who over time gathered documents and objects linked to the region’s part in the events of national unification.
The route, renewed with multimedia tools, follows the birth of united Italy through the stories of people and events, from the tricolour of 1797 to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 and the capture of Rome in 1870, with particular attention to lesser-known figures and the local context.
The collection includes paintings, prints, letters and documents, firearms and edged weapons, Garibaldian red shirts and other relics linked to figures such as Mazzini, Garibaldi and Francesco Nullo. The museum also has a teaching room for school activities.
