About the museum

The Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro stands next to the Duomo di Napoli and houses the works donated over five centuries to the patron saint by sovereigns, popes, nobles and ordinary people. The treasure belongs to the Deputazione della Reale Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, an ancient lay institution founded in 1601, which has always looked after its conservation. During the Second World War the most precious objects were taken to the Vatican and returned to the cathedral in 1947.

The museum opened to the public in December 2003, with a project financed by private donors, European funds and local institutions, which allows the works to be seen together along a single route, together with the Cappella del Tesoro in the Duomo. Since 2021 the management of public services has been entrusted to D'Uva on behalf of the Deputazione.

Among the main pieces are the mitre of San Gennaro, made in 1713 by the goldsmith Matteo Treglia with 3,694 precious stones, and the necklace assembled between 1679 and 1929 with gifts from sovereigns, nobles and the faithful. Also on display are the insignia of the Order of San Gennaro, founded in 1738 by Charles III of Bourbon, a chalice of Francis II, an episcopal cross of Umberto I and Margherita of Savoy, around seventy silver objects, and paintings by Luca Giordano, Massimo Stanzione, Giacomo Farelli and Aniello Falcone.
