About the museum
The Pio Monte della Misericordia was founded in Naples in 1602 to help the poor, and even today the proceeds from visits support its charitable work. The seat is a 17th-century palazzo in the historic centre, on Via dei Tribunali, near the Duomo.
The heart of the museum is the church, which houses Caravaggio’s canvas “The Seven Works of Mercy”, painted for the high altar and surrounded by six other works by Neapolitan masters of the 17th century. The route continues into the Quadreria, the collection of paintings that has enriched the institution’s holdings over time.
Today the Pio Monte presents itself as an inclusive museum, with routes dedicated to accessibility, and funds social, educational and welfare projects.
