About the museum
The museum is housed in a 17th-century house in the oldest part of Villette, in the Valle Vigezzo. Its name recalls the two unmarried sisters who lived there, called “feman da la piaza” in dialect. The interiors recreate the setting in which the people of the past lived.
The collection arose from the commitment of the Villette community, which made much of the material available, and of the Municipality, owner of the building, which handled the administrative process. It includes household, agricultural, mountain and trade tools, furniture, clothing and toys: among the objects are an antique high chair, a cradle, bed warmers (scaldaletti), hemp combs, wool spinning tools (filarelli), a butter churn (zangola) and a working loom, as well as school desks from the early 20th century.
The permanent display is being planned and set up. The museum is part of the network of the Associazione Musei dell’Ossola and in summer 2023 hosted the exhibition “Donne, Madonne e treni” as part of the centenary of the Ferrovia Vigezzina-Centovalli.
