About the museum
The museum is an integral part of the School of Medicine of the University of Pisa. According to the university regulations it arose around 1870 as a collection of anatomical-pathological specimens for teaching and research; other sources give 1884.
It holds about 1,500 anatomical specimens, both dry and in liquid, continually enriched with rare pieces or pieces of particular interest. Among the historic collections are materials from the Grand Ducal period, such as bladder stones and preparations of malformed newborns, and a series of organs taken during autopsies and preserved in alcohol, together with human and animal remains of pathological interest.
In recent decades a palaeopathology section has been added, with ancient human skeletal remains showing signs of disease and a pre-Columbian mummy. The museum belongs to the university’s Division of Palaeopathology.
