About the museum
The museum occupies the monastic complex of Sant'Agostino in Genoa, with its Gothic church, one of the best-preserved medieval monuments in the city, and the triangular cloister. It opened in 1939 as the Museo di Architettura e Scultura Ligure, suffered serious damage during the war, and reopened in 1984 in spaces designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg.
The route starts from Piazza Sarzano, crosses the cloister and leads into the church, passing through an immersive room where multimedia projections “land” the visitor in 14th-century Genoa. More than sixty marble capitals from Carrara, the “forest of capitals”, emblematic of the architecture of the period, are also on display.
The visit culminates with the remains of the mausoleum of Margaret of Brabant, wife of Emperor Henry VII: the “Elevatio animae”, a masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano, which returned to Genoa after a long restoration at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
The museum holds thousands of works from antiquity to the 19th century, which in a sense form the city's monumental archive; a monthly programme of guided tours also opens the storerooms to visitors. The museum has entered a new phase, with structural adaptation works and a new display planned.
