About the museum
The Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti (Ligurian Academy of Fine Arts) was founded in 1751 by members of the Genoese aristocracy close to Enlightenment ideas, coordinated by the Marquis Giovanni Francesco Doria, with its first schools of painting, sculpture and architecture. After some temporary premises, since 1831 it has been housed in the neoclassical building designed by the city architect Carlo Barabino, built from 1826 on the site of a convent beside the church of San Domenico and overlooking Piazza De Ferrari.
The collection began in 1751 with a small nucleus of works for the training of young artists and grew over time through purchases and donations, to include more than three hundred paintings, around two thousand drawings and more than four thousand prints, together with sculptures, plaster casts, sketches, ceramics, photographs and historic furnishings. It was displayed to the public separately from the school only from 1980, when the museum was inaugurated on the initiative of the director Gianfranco Bruno.
The picture gallery is the most important part and documents art in Liguria from the 14th century to the present day. It holds gold-ground paintings and masterpieces of the Genoese school between the 16th and 17th centuries, from Luca Cambiaso to Bernardo Strozzi and Domenico Piola, 19th-century works by Alfredo D'Andrade and Ernesto Rayper, and 20th-century works by Rubaldo Merello, Plinio Nomellini and Giuseppe Cominetti. The holdings constitute the city's first public collection.
