About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Tortona, also called MuDi, was opened temporarily in 2004 on the occasion of the exhibition “Tesori nascosti d’arte e di fede nel territorio della Diocesi di Tortona” (Hidden Treasures of Art and Faith in the Territory of the Diocese of Tortona). It has been open to the public regularly since 2014. It is housed in the building that held the episcopal seminary, in Via Seminario, and is part of the diocesan cultural centre together with the diocesan archive and library.
The museum gathers works from the city of Tortona and from the wide territory of the diocese and tells its history through artistic production, also offering a pastoral experience to the diocesan community. The works come from the Palazzo vescovile, from the storerooms of the seminary and from civic collections.
The route unfolds over three levels, with an itinerary that is both thematic and chronological, and includes paintings, statues, liturgical vestments, silverware and ancient documents. The sections are the Sala Loreto, the Gallery of the Bishops on the first and second floors, works of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sala Perosi, the room of library and archival holdings, the ancient works and the 17th-century paintings. Among the main pieces are the purple Gospel book of Sarezzano (5th–6th century), the Lucedio Triptych by Macrino d’Alba (1499) and the Martyrdom of Saint Marziano by Giovan Battista Tassinari (1606).
