About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the sculptor Eli Riva (Como, 1921–2007), who carved marble directly, without preparatory models, and is regarded as the last heir of the Magistri Cumacini. After the retrospective exhibition “Eli Riva – Tradizione e Modernità”, held in 2015 at Villa Olmo during EXPO and visited by about 13,000 people, the Associazione Eli Riva set up the permanent museum in the studio where the artist worked.
The museum displays works that document the artist’s development: the “Due Teste” (Two Heads) of the 1950s in Egyptian porphyry, the “Piastre” (Plates) of 1956, from a period of transition towards abstraction, and the more recent “Case degli Angeli” (Houses of the Angels), airy works in which the sculptor works with empty space. There is also a plaster model for the 1951 war memorial, made for a Sanremo municipal competition, as well as works in marble, wood and wax.
