About the museum
The museum was founded in October 2000 in the 18th-century masseria of San Pietro a Patierno, in Naples, next to the ancient church of Maria Santissima della Luce. The church, looted after the 1980 earthquake and reduced to ruins, has in recent years been restored to its original state by a group of volunteers.
The route is organised in three sections. The first is devoted to farm tools, displayed in themed rooms: ploughing and sowing, harvesting and processing of produce, transport and sale, and the grape harvest. There are ploughs, sieves, presses, barrels, an electric mower, one of the first large threshing machines and a reconstructed farmhouse (casa colonica).
The section on popular religious devotion keeps devotional objects and Neapolitan nativity scenes (presepi) in the church, while the documents section holds written records, in copy or original, on the customs and everyday life of rural society. The museum is linked to a library and an educational workshop with multimedia equipment.
