About the museum
The museum opened in 2009 thanks to a generous donation, with the aim of reconstructing the historical memory of three Milanese charitable institutions: the boys' orphanage of the Martinitt, the girls' orphanage of the Stelline and the Pio Albergo Trivulzio, a welfare body. The building is a 1930s building at Corso Magenta 57, which remained the property of the institutions when the Palazzo delle Stelline was sold after the girls' orphanage closed.
The interactive route runs through ten rooms and tells the story of the admission of orphans, schooling, vocational training, spaces of daily life, Milanese craft culture and the benefactors who supported the institutions. Multimedia stations allow visitors to read the documents that marked the lives of the orphans and the history of Milan.
The heritage includes the historical archives of the three institutions, a library from the boys' orphanage, the Carlo Silvestri fund, a photographic archive still being catalogued, and 137 portraits of benefactors from the 16th to the 20th century, largely kept in storage. The museum is run by the Pio Albergo Trivulzio and offers activities for schools, workshops, courses for older people and book presentations.
