About the museum
The Museo nazionale dei trasporti was founded in 1986 with the aim of preserving and promoting the vehicles that tell the story of transport in Italy. Its initial specialisation concerned road public transport, in particular trolleybuses, which the museum restores and conserves: today it holds around twenty examples, making it one of the major memory centres for this type of vehicle.
Later the interest extended to the railway sector. The museum section devoted to rail transport was inaugurated in 2003 and is located in the buildings of the former Squadra Rialzo of the Ferrovie dello Stato, near the station. It includes locomotives such as the E.626.294 of 1937 and the steam locomotive 740.278 of 1922, both in working order, the steam locomotive 640.004, awaiting restoration, as well as railway wagons and tram cars.
Among the exhibits are the steam locomotive of the Gruppo 743, a small battery-powered locomotive, the two-axle diesel locomotive known as the “sogliola” (sole), an antique 19th-century goods wagon and a postal van. In the larger area a stretch of track has been reconstructed with ballast and service trolleys. The museum’s historic vehicles are also used to organise tourist trips on historic trains, for example in Lunigiana.
