About the museum
The museum is housed in the Villa Floridiana, on the Vomero hill. In 1817 Ferdinand of Bourbon bought the property as a summer residence for Lucia Migliaccio, Duchess of Floridia; between 1817 and 1819 the architect Antonio Niccolini restructured the buildings and redesigned the park in the English garden style. After several changes of ownership, the villa was bought by the State in 1919.
The collection originates from the donation by the Duke of Martina, who in 1911 left to the city of Naples his collection of over 6,000 objects of Western and Oriental decorative art. The museum was established in the 1920s (the directorate gives 1926) and has grown over time through new acquisitions.
The route occupies three levels. On the ground floor are paintings, ivories, enamels, medieval and Renaissance bronzes, maiolica, glass and furniture; on the first floor European eighteenth-century porcelain is displayed, including Meissen, Capodimonte and Sèvres; in the basement the art of the Far East is presented, with Chinese Ming and Qing porcelain and Japanese Kakiemon and Imari ceramics. The park of the villa is open to everyone free of charge.
