About the museum
The Fondazione Plart was founded in Naples in 2008 around the collection donated by its founders, Maria Pia Incutti and Salvatore Paliotto. The museum is in the Chiaia district, in Via Giuseppe Martucci, in the basement spaces of a late 19th-century building that was once used as stables; the spaces were renovated over about 1,000 square metres.
The collection, the result of long research carried out by Maria Pia Incutti above all between the 1970s and 1990s in vintage shops, flea markets and auctions around the world, numbers over 2,000 objects. Alongside works by artists and designers such as Tony Cragg, Haim Steinbach, Peter Ghyczy, Riccardo Dalisi, Andrea Branzi, Enrico Baj and Ugo La Pietra, the core is a selection of anonymous design that traces the history of plastics from the second half of the 19th century to the present: bags, jewellery, furniture, tools, household appliances, toys and radios in celluloid, bois durci, phenolic resins, polyethylene, PVC and other polymers. There are also prototypes by Gufram from the 1960s and 1970s.
In 2009 the Regione Campania recognised the Plart as a museum of regional interest; since 2010 it has been part of the network of the Giacimenti del Design Italiano of the Triennale di Milano, and since 2020 of the Luoghi del Contemporaneo. Besides the exhibition rooms, the museum hosts Plart Vision, a multimedia gallery with interactive installations on the history of polymers and sustainability, an events area and a conference room.
