About the museum
The museum is housed in the former convent of the Carmelite Fathers, a large building whose original core dates from the second half of the 13th century and which was renovated and enlarged between the first half of the 14th and the 18th century. The museum is named after its founder, Count Agostino Sieri Pepoli, who established it as the Museo Civico between 1906 and 1908.
The heritage derives largely from three collections: the antiquities and art collections of Count Pepoli, the picture collection of General Giovan Battista Fardella, and the museum of Count Francesco Hernandez of Erice. It became a National Museum in 1925 and, with regional law no. 80 of 1977, a regional museum.
The route is laid out over two floors. On the ground floor are the section of Renaissance sculpture and the historical-Risorgimento section, with memorabilia and 19th-century paintings. On the first floor are the picture gallery, with paintings from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century, and the extensive section of applied arts, with nativity figurines, ceramics, textiles, gold and silver, coral objects and jewels. The archaeological section has been renewed, and a numismatic section is planned. The museum also manages other sites, including the former Florio plant in Favignana and the Colombaia castle in Trapani.
