About the museum
The museum grew out of the wish to collect the evidence of the Italian cavalry: on 20 June 1958 an association was founded for this purpose, later renamed the Società Amici del Museo Nazionale della Cavalleria Italiana. Pinerolo, known as the “cradle of the cavalry” for its long military traditions, was chosen as the seat.
The town council made available a wing of the former Caserma Fenulli (formerly Principe Amedeo), which from 1849 for about a century housed the Cavalry Application School. The museum was inaugurated on 13 October 1968.
The covered exhibition areas occupy about 5,500 square metres with 240 display cases. The collections have grown with material assigned by the Ministry of Defence and with donations from over 900 bodies and individuals, so that the museum is considered one of the richest arms museums in Europe. To mark the 200th anniversary of the Cavalry School, a section on the school was set up and the room dedicated to Federigo Caprilli was renewed.
