Museo La Specola

Museum of the astronomical observatory of Padua in the medieval tower of the Castel Vecchio, open only with a guided tour.

Ask the museum for opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

The observatory was established by the Venetian Senate on 21 May 1761. Abbot Giuseppe Toaldo proposed converting a medieval tower of the Castel Vecchio into a specola (observatory), and the project was entrusted to the architect Domenico Cerato; the works took place from 1767 to 1777. Galileo never worked in this building.

The observatory became an autonomous body in 1923 and joined the INAF in 2002. The museum opened in the tower in 1994.

The guided tour passes through the entrance hall and the 14th-century staircase, the Sala dell’Iscrizione with instruments for measuring time and the prison built by Ezzelino III da Romano, the Sala Colonna with portraits of the directors and small instruments used by astronomers, and the Sala Meridiana with the meridian line on the floor and the large mural quadrant by Jesse Ramsden of 1779. In the Sala delle Figure are the frescoes by Giacomo Ciesa (1772–73) with eight astronomers and meteorologists, and from the terrace there is a 360-degree view over Padua.
