About the museum
The museum's origins go back to 1973, when a museum of sacred art was created to preserve works from the diocesan territory; for several years it could be visited only on request. In 2000, on the occasion of the Great Jubilee, state funding made it possible to fit out part of the Palazzo Vescovile as an exhibition space, and the museum was permanently opened to the public.
The palace, which stands beside the cathedral in Piazza Duomo, has a 14th-century core and was enlarged in the 15th century. The route unfolds over two levels around the Salone dei Vescovi (Hall of Bishops), with portraits of bishops frescoed in the circle of Bartolomeo Montagna, and includes the chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in 1495 for Bishop Pietro Barozzi, with a triptych by Jacopo da Montagnana.
The roughly two hundred works on display range from the 9th to the 19th century and come from the cathedral and the churches of the diocese. In the Belvedere rooms are paintings of the 14th and 15th centuries and works of the 17th and 18th centuries, including pieces by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo. The museum is part of an integrated route with the Baptistery of the Cathedral.
