About the museum
Palazzo Abatellis is a late 15th-century residence in the Catalan Gothic style, built for Francesco Patella, known as Abatellis, master portolan of the kingdom and praetor of the city, who entrusted the works to the architect Matteo Carnalivari. After his death the palace became a Benedictine convent, and on the north-east side a small rectangular chapel with cross vaults was built; in the following centuries various changes and extensions were made. The building is arranged around a large atrium with one porticoed side.
Since 1953 the palace has housed the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, which displays works by medieval Sicilian artists, late medieval painted crosses, Arab-period vases and artefacts, and paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the most important works are the splendid 15th-century fresco of the Triumph of Death by an unknown author, considered a masterpiece of painting of that period, the delicate bust of Eleonora d'Aragona by Francesco Laurana, and the Annunziata by Antonello da Messina, painted in 1473 and regarded as an icon of the Italian Renaissance.
