About the museum
For four centuries the palace was the Palermo residence of the Filangeri and later of the Lanza Filangieri, princes of Mirto, in the heart of the Kalsa, the ancient Arab citadel. Excavations and restoration work have brought to light structures from the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries; in 1793 the building was transformed, and the façade on Via Merlo was rebuilt in 1876.
In 1892 Maria Concetta Lanza Filangeri donated the residence to the Sicilian Region, so that it would remain intact and open to the public. The palace, which extends over several floors with a marble staircase, preserves the original furnishings of a great aristocratic family: walls covered with silk panels, tapestries, Murano chandeliers, gilt bronze clocks, Capodimonte figurines and a collection of historical musical instruments.
Among the best-known rooms are the Salone degli Arazzi, with the stories of Cupid and Psyche, the so-called Salvator Rosa drawing room, the embroidered bedroom and the Chinese boudoir. The route also includes the former prison, the kitchens and the stables, where 19th-century carriages, gigs and harnesses from the Martorana Genuardi collection of the Barons of Molinazzo are displayed.
