About the museum
Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino, also known as Palazzo Podestà, stands along the 16th-century Strada Nuova, today via Garibaldi, and is one of the Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built for Nicolosio Lomellino around 1563–1569 to a design by Giovanni Battista Castello, known as Il Bergamasco, with the works supervised by the architect Bernardino Cantone.
The façade is entirely decorated in stucco and is unique along the whole street; inside, the oval atrium, the entrance hall and the courtyard follow one another, the courtyard closed by a spectacular nymphaeum, beyond which terraced gardens extend with statues and fountains. The palace has two noble floors: the first preserves the frescoes by Bernardo Strozzi, rediscovered after the removal of a false ceiling, while the second shows 18th-century mythological decorations commissioned by the Pallavicini.
Over the centuries the property passed to the Centurione family (1609), the Pallavicini (1711) and the Raggi family, and in 1865 to Baron Andrea Podestà, several times mayor of Genoa; today it belongs to the Bruzzo family. The Associazione Palazzo Lomellino di Strada Nuova promotes its enhancement through exhibitions, publications and the opening to the public of the garden and the first noble floor.
